Trains are really cool
One of the unexpected fun things I have come across are trains. Of coarse. The C&O Canal was being built to get goods to Ohio at the same time the Iron Horse was being built to get there. It was a race to see who would arrive first. Sadly, the Iron Horse beat the canal…

Kidney stones are incredibly painful…
…and can send you to the hospital. Yup. Wound up in West Virginia University Hospital at Morgantown for just less than 48 hours. Not the kink I thought I would face next. On Tuesday, May 20, I was getting ready for a few inches of rain coming in at Outflow Recreation area. I had some…

Been out here a while
Today starts my eighth week since leaving Bynum. It’s been….an adventure. The learning curve was sharp but I now feel like everything is settling into a routine. Any kinks that come up should not be so hard to manage now that I have had some practice with them. A lot of my expectations have changed…

Today’s hike
We’re hiking along the Great Allegheny Passage near Confluence, PA. Here’s a picture of the two rivers that come together here. The Casselman and Youghiogheny. Here’s a picture. The Casselman is the brown muddy part and the Youghiogheny is the green/blue part. Very cool.

We’re Moving Onward
Trying to outrun the weather but not likely to have much luck. Rain is expected seven of the next ten days. But it might not be too bad. We’re at the Outflow Campground in Confluence, Pennsylvania. It’s a pretty little place. Sits on the edge of two rivers and direct access to the Great Allegheny…

It’s Raining Again
Yup. Around 2 inches expected in this area, Cumberland, Maryland, in the next 24 hours. Camping next to creeks and flash floods also in the forecast. Headed indoors again. Jack and I are ensconced at a Sleep Inn Hotel for the night. I might have made it through the rain if I had stayed put…

Some Unexpected Pleasures
The Canadian geese nesting and raising their goslings at Antietam Creek. I didn’t get pictures but how fun to see them. Graveyards. All the communities I am driving through would, of course, have graveyards. I am stopping at a few to take a look around at a few. Because I am in the middle of…

Today’s Walk
We’re walking along the path around mile 110. In fact, I am camping right at the 110 mile marker. We walked along the path in an area called “Four Locks”. Back in the day it was a little town built around 4 locks that were built close together. The description of it reminds me of…

Getting things together
So the last time I posted was after a thunderstorm had destroyed my campsite. I went scurrying to another hotel and spent 3 nights there. I really can’t afford to keep doing that so I am figuring out how to live in the rain. Tonight, I am in another campsite back at McCoy’s Ferry. And…

We’re still walking
I know it’s been a week or more since the last post so I thought I would just say we’re still out here. It’s been a rough week and I will write more later. But we’re fine.

Expectations, I’d like to introduce you to Reality
Reality, meet Expectations If you haven’t heard from me for a few days it is because things are going pretty well. Or, at the very least, as expected. I am now in my fourth week on the road and still developing a routine that will work for me and Jack. In a little bit, I…

Planning Ahead
Jack and I have spent most of today at home. We got some more things in order. I am going to the grocery store in a bit but that’s all for today. I have added a page to the blog: Itinerary. Take a look if you like. Writing everything down is a bit intimidating as…

Safe and Sound
I haven’t written in a couple of days so wanted folk to know that we are safe and sound. Settled into our third spot, Greenbelt National Park. We will be here until April 25th. If you would like to send mail the address is Carrie Overgaard, c/o Greenbelt National Park, 6565 Greenbelt Road, Greenbelt, Maryland…

The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Path
I officially started the Great American Rail Trail yesterday. Here’s the link. https://www.railstotrails.org/site/greatamericanrailtrail/ I actually went out to Georgetown University and walked back into Washington, DC. Got to mile Zero of the C & O Towpath. It is at Thompson’s Boat House, a landmark in DC. There was a lot going on there. They were…

Thanks for all the Love
Just to let you know, I am reading all the comments. And loving every one and everyone. Jack and I did spend 2 nights in a motel but we are back at the tent now. It was very sunny today and everything seems to have dried out except the fire pit. Having a little trouble…

It is freakin’ cold.
I knew April would be a little chilly but I did not expect the temperatures to drop below freezing with freeze warnings. And I have wimped out for a couple of days. Between drenching rain and freezing temps I spent last night at a motel and tonight Jack and I are inside again. Jack is…

And today sucked
It has been cold and rainy and Jack and I have had a sucky day. First, I spilled my entire Venti cup of coffee before even taking a sip. I was still inside Starbucks so didn’t make a mess on my stuff. It took a…..long…..time….for someone to come help me clean up the mess. Then…
