I left Bynum today. FINALLY. It feels like a million years since I started this adventure.
Jack and I are tired so just going to write about today. When we were finally on the road it didn’t take long to realize that, despite my perfect planning, we would be setting up in the dark. Not my first choice. So, around 7ish, started looking for a place to stay.
Just going to add in here that the day doesn’t seem so bad now that I have had something to eat.
I spent the morning getting the last minute packing done. And cleaning the house. And getting the mail. And doing some recycling. And taking the trash out. I wanted it perfect for when Kathy, my house/pet sitter arrives. It looks nice. But I forgot to get flowers.
When I went to bed it seemed as though I could get gone by 10am. Such wishful thinking on my part. No. It was noon. Quick hugs to Pat Bell and Maggie Frantz (again). Drive by at Jamie Hagar’s but she was at the vet. The pups were getting their shots. Then off we went.
As I have mentioned, I realized that we were destined to set up in the dark because we left so late. The drive was around 6 hours without stops. And both Jack and I would need to pee at some point so stops were inevitable.
Then, in Baltimore, it became apparent that my phone was going dead. I had been using the GPS all day, for directions, etc., without it being plugged in to charge. Because the charger was packed. Somewhere. We were also running out of gas. Stuck in Baltimore traffic. But I didn’t panic. Which is sorta new for me. As I have been planning this trip hiccoughs have happened. Some big, some small. But it had occurred to me that this might be the normal way things went. So, kept going. Eventually got out of traffic. Then got gas. We were about 90 miles and 2 hours from Killens Pond. So, decided to stop in about an hour, around 7. This put us over the Bay Bridge. OMG. How Beautiful is THAT. It was stunning. I kept encouraging Jack to look out the window but he just looked puzzled. It was awesome.
When we got over the bridge I decided to just buy a car charger. I thought I only had one anyway and felt like two would be useful. Stopped at Safeway. Used my mom’s phone number to get a discount. Also got something to eat then sat in the parking lot calling motels. I needed to find one that would allow Jack to stay. After a couple of calls we landed at a Best Western about 2 miles from where we sat.
Checked in. Fed Jack. Ate something. Then looked outside. The skies had opened and it was pouring rain. I cannot imagine setting up in the dark, in the rain, the first night out. Chances are good that I will set up in the rain at some point. But I do think, despite my timing skills, I can avoid setting up in the dark.
